San Diego Asian Film Festival

Noted by USA Today as one of the 10 Reasons to Visit San Diego, be sure to join us Nov. 1-9 for our 13th San Diego Asian Film Festival. Most of the films will take place at the Mission Valley UltraStar Cinema, but opening night will be at the North Park Birch Theater, along with additional screenings at MoPA and Cinepolis.

Susan Hiller: Psi Girls

Describing her work as "paraconceptual" American-born and London-based artist Susan Hiller combines modalities of conceptual art practice with investigations of paranormal phenomena. The influence of the inexplicable on the everyday finds particular expression in Psi Girls, a five-screen video installation comprising color-altered clips from five popular films of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

In the world premiere musical, "Words By, Ira Gershwin and the Great American Songbook," the lesser-known lyricist brother of the famous Gershwin duo guides us on a trip through some of the greatest American songs ever written. Not only do we hear the standards written by the brothers, but also many of the classics where Ira wrote lyrics to the music of Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Jerome Kern and Kurt Weill. Insights and tales about the colorful George, as well as a glimpse at the more private and understated life of Ira, frame this story of amazing and beautiful music.

A Hammer, a Bell and a Song to Sing

From the American Revolution to the civil rights movement to the Occupy protests, music has served as a powerful agent of change in American history. Inspired by the songs and words of legendary activist Pete Seeger, “A Hammer, a Bell and a Song to Sing” celebrates this history in song, story and spoken word with more than 25 selections from multiple artists. Seeger’s grandson, Tao Seeger, said, “If we want to get people talking to each other, we should try to get them singing together.”

Heart & Soul of Mexico

One of the most esteemed Mexican muralists and painters, Raul Anguiano depicts the people, customs, celebrations and traditions of Mexico throughout this rare collection of more than 90 pieces of art never shown previously in the United States. There will also be photographs by Mario Castillo, born in Ocotlán, Jalisco, Mexico, in 1953. Castillo is a self-taught photographer whose work has focused on the ethnic groups of Mexico and is a recipient of multiple prizes and acknowledgements across Mexico and the United States.
