The San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park is physically located inland from Escondido in the San Pasqual Valley. But its really in the bush of another continent or so it seems to visitors. Here animals are seen in their natural settings with so much room to roam that it hardly seems like a zoo.? Visitors ride the trams to view the various exhibits and its almost possible to believe its a real safari.  

There are several interesting shows--elephants, hawks and all types of birds entertain and educate. Trainers and critters are often available in the park for close encounters. Walking through the various areas is like being transported to the region. The landscaping is interesting in its own right and the park does horticultural shows during the year.

Special programs include photo safaris, sleep-overs and summer camps.  The shops are well-stocked with unique merchandise in addition to souvenirs. During the summer, the park is open in the evenings and offers a unique view of the animals in the cooler part of the day. The park is hilly and requires a lot of walking so dress accordingly.
