The Del Mar Fairgrounds is located off I-5 just north of Del Mar. The Fairgrounds are home to the Del Mar Racetrack as well as stables, numerous exhibit halls and event rings. The site opens up to the Pacific Ocean on it western end and many of buildings have ocean views. During racing season, race horses and their handlers are often seen exercising on the beach.
The Del Mar Fair, held on the grounds each June, is the official San Diego County Fair. Generations of San Diego residents have fond memories of the fair's exhibits, food, carnival rides and games. Its a must-do event for kids and grownups alike as summer begins. The fair includes live entertainment, fireworks, animal exhibits, a flower show, a variety of games of chance and some exciting rides. The ferris wheel can be seen for miles at night and the fair ends each year with a fabulous fireworks show on the Fourth of July.
Later in each summer after the Fair ends, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opens its racing meet bringing the top race horses and trainers to San Diego for a six-week season. The racetrack's theme is "Where the turf meets the surf," and it's founders included Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante and many other Hollywood greats. Many famous horses have raced here including Seabiscuit, who ran some of his first successful races here.
Opening day at the races is a signal for all of the ladies in San Diego to pull out their fanciest chapeaus and party at the Turf Club. Del Mar Racetrack is a family friendly venue and often holds special events for kids on the infield. Track activities are easy to view from almost all areas of the grandstand and hanging out in the Turf Club is a tried and true San Diego tradition.
During the rest of the year, the Fairgrounds are used for various exhibits and expositions. Antique shows, car shows, garden shows and many other shows are open to the public.
