Carriers have always been a fixture of the Navy's presence in San Diego. Now in addition to the active carriers stationed at North Island, San Diego has the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum.
In January of 2004, the USS Midway was towed into Navy Pier and permanently docked alongside the San Diego embarcadero. The Midway has become the center of the largest museum in the country devoted to carriers and naval aviation.
The Midway was commissioned in 1945 and was the largest carrier to ever put to sea as of that date. She saw action in Korea, VietNam and the Gulf War. She was often home-ported out of San Diego. The museum opens in June, 2004 and there are ambitious plans for exhibits and virtual displays about the Midway and the workings of an active carrier.
