Standing by the San Diego embarcadero is a plain black obelisk engraved with the names of every naval aircraft carrier from the USS Langley to the USS Truman--164 in all. Landscaped with colorful flowers, the Aircraft Carrrier Memorial was dedicated in 1993 as over 1,000 carrier veterans, friends and family watched.
A life-size statue of a sailor was added in 1995 to commemorate V-J day, the end of World War II. In 1996, a statue of a naval aviator was added.
Recently the USS Midway was towed into the Navy Pier behind the memorial, and it makes a fitting backdrop for the shaft dedicated to the sailors and airman who man the carriers. Active duty carriers tied up across the harbor at North Island connect the monument to the present.
