Beaumont's: A neighborhood kind of place

Beaumont's positions itself as a neighborhood kind of place, located near the high density corners of Bird Rock, catering to local residents. It seemed to me that the whole neighborhood was there. The restaurant was filled with happy diners.

"We're pretty busy on weekends too," owner David Heine said. "We offer music Thursday through Saturday and people like to eat or to just come in for drinks and hang out."

The secret must be out. People from all over the city have now discovered Beaumont's. "We even get some residual traffic from the crowd that used to hang out at Jack's At The Beach, which just closed. This is a comfortable setting to meet and mingle," Heine continued.

Heine and his wife, Megan, also own and operate the famous Brockton Villa in La Jolla, which overlooks the ocean and seals. The Villa is a favorite resident and visitor destination for its wonderful views and even better American cuisine. Working between the two locations and raising their family keeps both the Heines busy. "My time isn't divided. It's fractured!" Heine added.

Getting to Beaumont's is a pleasant drive along La Jolla Village Drive, just a long stone's throw from the ocean. Sea breezes can really whet an appetite. The road meanders around unique traffic circles that are designed to slow the speedy traffic that used to roar down the street. You can't miss Beaumont's -- with its protected patio all lit up brightly.

The interior has clean, simple lines and very nice lighting that bring out the best features of diners and dinners. The bar area and dining area are separated by dividers. There are high tables in both areas as well as conventional tables and booths. One may dine in either area.

Chef Scott Cathcart, who creates magic in a small but busy kitchen, is well known locally. He's worked at such fine local eateries as BelleFleur, Pampelmousse and Kensington Grill before joining Beaumont's. He often creates unique and tasty soups as special dishes and also does wonderful things with fish.

Health conscious visitors often begin with salads. The Baby Iceberg & Tomato Salad was a large wedge of cold lettuce covered with blue cheese and crumbles, along with bacon and apple. Butter Lettuce & Glazed Bosc Pears blended sweetness and lightness. Spicy pecans and blue cheese vinaigrette exploded with taste.

Starters and Tastings included "Guy Fries" that come with blue cheese and garlic. Pistachio Baked Brie with crostini to spread it on is just yummy and filling. Grilled California Globe Artichoke, with clarified butter, is great for sharing and conversation.

Among the entrees, Miso Glazed Natural Salmon with shrimp fried rice and stir fried vegetables was so good that my companion didn't want to share at first. The salmon was fresh, tender, firm and had sweetness raised by the miso glaze. The Oven Roasted Free Range Chicken with toasted almond saffron risotto and fruit chutney was excellent, with crispy skin and tender flesh. Sea Scallops & Shrimp Bahian Stew and "Beaumont's Burger" are also excellent choices.

Beaumont's is a casual, fun place to dine on excellent cuisine, enjoy great service, and just hang out while listening to live music from contemporary local bands. The website, beaumontseatery.com, lists the band schedule.

Beumont's is open daily for dinner and the bar through closing (latest 2 a.m.). It also serves breakfast and lunch on weekends. Prices are moderate. Reservations are recommended.

The restaurant is located at 5662 La Jolla Blvd. in Bird Rock, which is between La Jolla and Pacific Beach. Call 858-459-0474 for reservations and directions.
