About 15 miles north of downtown San Diego is Sorrento Valley, a neighborhood best known for its concentration of high-tech and biotech companies and its proximity to the natural beauty of the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.
The neighborhood was originally zoned for industrial use, but several single-family and condominium housing projects mean some 5,000 residents call Sorrento Valley home. Since Sorrento Valley is considered a neighborhood, rather than a recognized community planning area, it falls under the domain of three different San Diego community-planning groups: Mira Mesa, Torrey Pines and University.
Sorrento Valley is home to many of San Diego’s most high-profile corporations, including Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM), Chicken of the Sea, Arena Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ARNA), Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC, and BIOVIA, previously known as Accelrys.
Qualcomm has a number of corporate buildings around Sorrento Valley, though company officials won’t disclose just how many. Qualcomm’s local workforce is estimated at more than 15,000 employees.
