Torrey Pines is named for the distinctive pines that grow only in this area. Their wind-blown shapes dot the cliffs above the scenic beaches that characterize the coast here just south of Del Mar. Residents in this area live in the Del Mar Terraces and Del Mar Heights areas and there are small commercial areas designated along Carmel Valley Road and Del Mar Heights Road.
Much of the area is protected because of environmental concerns and wildlife. There are lagoons, wetlands, sandstone bluffs and canyons that provide hiking trails and bird watching. The beach area is wide and suitable for both children and swimmers. It is a busy place on a summer day.
