Legend has it that Spanish troops in 1797 first came across the valley now known as San Marcos while pursuing a small band of Native Americans who had stolen some animals from nearby Mission San Luis Rey. Today, visitors are attracted to the burgeoning North County city for its restaurants, educational institutions and shopping.

The suburb is the educational hub of North County, with a healthy retail sector and a burgeoning manufacturing industry.

“Our economy is pretty diverse,” Kildoo said. “We were able to weather the recession better than some other cities because of that.”
