College Area

Visitor Information

The College Area neighborhood centers around and is named for San Diego State University (SDSU).  The school began in 1897 as the San Diego Normal School in the area now known as Normal Heights.  In 1935, it was renamed San Diego State College and moved to its present location.  In the 1970s, the college became a university, but the College name continues to define the neighborhood.

El Cajon Boulevard serves as the shopping district for the College area and has recently been going through redevelopment adding a new supermarket and many new shops and restaurants.  The College Avenue median has recently been landscaped with new plants and stamped concrete.

San Diego State University will officially break ground on a new 23,500-square-foot basketball performance center. The university also has announced the building will be named the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center, in honor of the supporters whose key donations made the facility possible. The name was approved by the California State University Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Preliminary site work has already begun where the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center will be located, just south of the Fowler Athletics Center and east of the football practice fields. The facility, which will support the continued growth and development of the SDSU Menís and Womenís basketball teams, includes two full-length courts, eight baskets, locker rooms, film rooms, team lounges, athletic training room and coaches locker rooms.
