Visitor Information

Kearny Mesa is a community in northeast San Diego known for its industrial parks, car dealerships and authentic Asian restaurants and markets. From 1917 to 1946, the area was home to Camp Kearny, the area’s namesake, which is now Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Camp Kearny was named for Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny, a leader in the Mexican-American War who was also military governor of California. “Mesa” came from the area’s flat terrain. 

In the 1950s, General Dynamics and other aerospace and technology companies established facilities in Kearny Mesa, making it the center of the defense industry in San Diego. When the defense industry began downsizing in the early 1990s, General Dynamics closed its facility, which was redeveloped into commercial and residential buildings now called Spectrum.

Kearny Mesa is a business-focused community, home to few residents but many aerospace, technology and industrial firms.

The area has a population of about 3,200, comprising only 540 people per square mile compared with the San Diego average of 4,089 people per square mile. One-fourth of the population is of Asian ancestry. The main residential developments in the community are Stonecrest, Kearny Lodge and Royal Highlands.
