New auditorium for UCSD Rady School under way

The Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego broke ground Friday on a new auditorium as part of the expansion of the Rady School campus.

The auditorium in the new building will be named in recognition of the support of Betty and Dr. J. Robert Beyster. The 50,000-square-foot expansion with a 295-seat auditorium as its centerpiece will accommodate conferences and program activities that engage multiple classes at once.

Along with the auditorium, the expansion will hold a classroom for 185 students, two tiered classrooms for 75 students each, 45 faculty offices, room for the Rady School Ph.D. program, three flat classrooms holding 30 to 50 students for various purposes and 18 team study rooms holding five to 10 students each for undergraduate and MBA use. It will also include multi-purpose conference rooms, and room for the expansion for executive development and a student services center.

The building will be designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification standards.

The new building was designed by Ellerbe Becket of San Francisco and HMC Architects of San Diego. The expansion is slated for completion in the summer of 2012.

A challenge gift from Ernest Rady led to a $5 million gift from Wells Fargo Bank, allowing the expansion of the Rady School campus to commence. The building will be named Wells Fargo Hall.

The building funds come from a public and private partnership. The new construction will be a five-story structure that connects with Otterson Hall on four levels. It will complete the interior courtyard constructed as part of an earlier project with its pedestrian walkways, landscaping and an outdoor seating area.

"The Rady School of Management is an integral part of the campus and the business community," said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox in a prepared statement. "The expansion of the business school will further advance our contribution to regional economic development, as we'll be able to train even more leaders for growth and innovation-driven industries."

"This expansion further demonstrates the commitment of the San Diego business community and our donors to building a world-class business school in San Diego," added Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan. "The expansion of our facilities will allow us to continue to develop more management talent, recruit additional faculty and introduce new programs."

The Rady School campus' first building opened officially on June 1, 2007 and is named Otterson Hall in honor of the late William Otterson for his contributions to the San Diego business community. In addition to the lead gifts from Evelyn and Ernest Rady and the Wells Fargo Foundation, the expansion will be partially constructed from private philanthropic funding by community leaders including Rita and Dick Atkinson, Betty and Dr. J Robert Beyster, Arthur Brody, Jan Tuttleman and Gillian and Tony Thornley.

The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego offers a full-time MBA program, a FlexMBA program for working professionals, a Ph.D. program, and undergraduate and executive education courses.
