Structural steel construction has been completed on the project to build a new 71,000-square-foot Heart and Vascular Center at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
A "topping out" ceremony, marking the milestone, was held last Friday by officials from Sharp Grossmont and Grossmont Healthcare District, as well as the project builder, McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. The taxpayer-funded project is estimated to cost $60 million. Sharp HealthCare is the operator of Sharp Grossmont Hospital.
The heart and vascular center will expand the hospital's surgical capabilities, according to Sharp, with new cardiac catheterization labs and multipurpose procedural rooms that can support a range of specialties from general surgery to endovascular interventional procedures. The facility will also house a new pharmacy and clinical lab.
Begun in April 2013, the project is expected to be complete next year.
