An open house-style public scoping meeting will be held next week to discuss the environmental review process for the planned San Dieguito Double Track and Special Events Platform Project in North County.
Unrelated to the future relocation of the rail line from the Del Mar Bluffs, which is planned between 2040 and 2050, the platform project is slated for construction between 2020 and 2030. Its three components include replacing the 96-year-old wooden trestle bridge over the San Dieguito Lagoon, adding one mile of second mainline track from southern Solana Beach to Jimmy Durante Boulevard and adding a special events platform at the Del Mar Fairgrounds that will serve trains operated by the North County Transit District and Amtrak.
The San Diego Association of Governments, the region’s metropolitan planning organization, has scheduled the public scoping meeting for 6 p.m. Jan. 22 at Del Mar Hills Academy, located at 14085 Mango Drive in Del Mar.
According to SANDAG, the rail improvements will increase the passenger and freight capacity of the 351-mile Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor and are part of a package of highway, rail and transit enhancements planned for the 27-mile Interstate 5 North Coast Corridor, which extends from Oceanside to San Diego.
