Harris wins I-8 widening contract

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced that Sim J. Harris Inc. of San Diego was the successful low bidder at $8.3 million and has been awarded the contract for the Interstate 8 widening project in El Cajon.
Contract work is expected to begin early next year and includes extending the eastbound left lane and upgrading the left shoulder between Second Street and Greenfield Drive, widening the bridges at East Main Street and Broadway and removal of the Grape Street pedestrian bridge.
The cost for construction is funded through the State Highway Operations and Protection Plan. The plan funds projects that maintain and preserve the investment in the California State Highway System.

SDCCU project now complete

KMA Architecture & Engineering announced that construction has been completed for a new San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) branch at 2245 Fenton Parkway, Suite 107 in the Fenton Marketplace in Mission Valley.
The 3,933 square-foot SDCCU commercial tenant improvement began in April and included demolition and construction to transform the tenant space.
"We have had a long standing project-based relationship with SDCCU and have designed and constructed many branches throughout San Diego, including Solana Beach, Encinitas, Murrieta, Poway, La Mesa, Temecula, and Laguna Niguel," said Tim Rubesh, principal architect of KMA.
The redesigned interior of the building features floor-to-ceiling frameless glass to separate offices and function as partitions, seven teller stations, a safe deposit vault, three private offices, a computer server room with uninterrupted power supply units, an employee break room and storage room.
KMA also provided electrical and mechanical engineering, architecture and plumbing services for the building. The firm's project team consisted of Kilian Atkins, Jim Belmont, Walt Chambers, Jay Guerrero, Billy Jennings, Tim Rubesh, Pedro Van Den Eeden, Laura Van Horn, Ilia Vorochihin and Alison Warren. Starrett Construction Inc. was the general contractor.
Fenton Marketplace is also home to Costco, IKEA, Lowe's and Starbucks.

Café at UCSD activity center ready to open

PCL Construction's special projects division has just completed work on the $1.6 million Thurgood Marshall Activity Center Ridgewalk Café & Market on the University of California, San Diego campus.
The 20-week project involved the renovation of an existing two-story wood frame structure with plaster exterior.
The work included converting the upper floor into a food service facility and the lower floor into a convenience market.
The cafe includes a full service kitchen, sales area and coffee bar. The interior work required structural modifications, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, new fire protection and alarm systems.
The exterior work included a patio area, landscaping, sidewalks, stairways, and an ADA lift elevator. The project was constructed to meet LEED Silver requirements and will be submitted for certification.
The PCL project manager was Glenn Evans, with Jimmy Ramirez as superintendent.
The architect was Alfredo Araiza Associates.
Major subcontractors includedHMT Electric, Western Mechanical, DG Plumbing, Arrow Automatic, JJJ Enterprises, Pacific Southwest Structures, JC Framing, Mark Beamish Waterproofing, Michael Blackman & Associates, Nevell Group, Allied Coatings, Fast Demo, Whitson CM, F.J. Brawley and Teserra Landscaping.

Improvement on Luce Forward

Johnson & Jennings General Contracting has completed tenant improvement construction for the law offices of Luce Forward in One America Plaza located at 600 W. Broadway in downtown San Diego.
The scope of work for the 100,000-square-foot occupied space renovation included cosmetic upgrades, new lighting, paint and carpet.
The contractor was retained for the project by Luce Forward, with Pat Balaoing providing construction oversight for the law firm. H.Hendy & Associates served as the project designer.
For Johnson & Jennings, Ken Worthen was the project manager and Mike Harrison was the project superintendent.
Subcontractors included Resource Floors, Zephyr Painting, B&B Acoustics and Dynalectic.

Roel gets contract for NCTD

Roel Construction Company has been awarded tenant improvement construction for North County Transit District (NCTD) located at 810 Mission Ave. in Oceanside. The project will consist of a complete remodel and expansion of the existing data center and will utilize funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).
The project team plans to pursue LEED certification for the project.
The size of the current center will be increased by approximately 30 percent and the data infrastructure will be replaced.
Additional work inside the data center will include installation of new SDT flooring, new acoustic ceiling system, and expansion of the existing Inergen system.
Exterior work will include installation of a new generator and CMU enclosure as well as a solar panel system on the roof. The $624,680 project is scheduled to begin in November 2009.
Angela Miller, chief information officer is managing the project for NCTD.
Bob Mobach of LOGICALIS is providing the data design and expansion services. Roel representatives include Steve Gray as the project executive, Dave McCarthy as senior project manager; Rob Netzer, LEED AP, as project manager; Gary LaFever as superintendent; Tyler Mitchell as project engineer; and Mindy Bryant as project coordinator.
