Barhart completes Tustin project
The Tustin Unified School District and construction manager Barnhart-Heery have completed the $19-million Foothill High School Science Center in Tustin.
The 48,000-square-foot complex consists of a pair of two-story buildings that house 14 classrooms with 10 laboratories for biology, chemistry and physics and four classrooms for earth sciences and physical sciences.
A two-story curved, glass-block stairway enclosure and a system of covered walkways connect the buildings that provide teachers with offices, a lounge and four specially designed prep rooms.
Energy-efficient features include fabricated-steel solar reflectors beneath windows to reflect incoming light from the north and fabricated-steel shading devices above the south-facing windows.
A landscaped courtyard contains curved planters that double as seating areas beneath mature palm trees.
The Science Center was funded by the $80-million Bond Measure G passed by voters in 2002 to repair and renovate the 20 oldest schools in the Tustin Unified School District.
Design services were provided by NTD Architecture. The Barnhart team working on the project included John Bernardy, senior vice president; John Squillace Sr., senior project manager; Dev Jadhav, project manager; and Jim Mullanix, field superintendent.
