Two contractors awarded Camp Pendleton project

Under a joint venture established just under a year ago, San Diego-based general contractors Straub Construction and C.W. Driver have been awarded their first project.

The $46.5 million contract is for the design and construction of six new facilities, renovation of existing facilities, and infrastructure and site improvements to support the truck company operations in the Margarita (33) Area of Camp Pendleton.

Joining Driver and Straub on the design-build project team are San Diego-based architectural firms RJC Architects and Gensler Architects.

The expected date of completion of the truck company complex is scheduled for September 2013.

Developed in 1953, The Margarita (33) Area is undergoing a major transformation with replacement of buildings, improving vehicular and pedestrian circulation, and adding landscaping and other site improvements consistent with the newer developments on the base.

New buildings will be replacing the existing dining facility, armory and single marine facility, and the existing vehicle maintenance facility will be totally renovated.

Other new facilities will include a company headquarters building, warehouse, dispatch building and communication hut.

The phased construction plan developed by the Straub/Driver team will provide all of these improvements without disrupting base operations.

This contract award was based on Best Value to the government.

This project is Straub's sixth project at Camp Pendleton in the past four years and Driver's first project at the base. The joint venture is planning to pursue additional projects in the near future.


Improvements on Chavez school complete

SAN DIEGO -- Jacob Dean Construction recently completed tenant improvement construction for King Chavez Charter School in The Executive Complex high-rise office building at 1010 2nd Ave., Second floor, in downtown San Diego. 

The 17,005-square-foot tenant improvement consisted of demolition of the former Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, and redesign and construction to achieve an E occupancy for the school. King Chavez now occupies the entire floor.

King Chavez Charter Schools focuses on preparing ninth- through 12th-grade students for both academic and vocational achievements featuring an A-G university prep curriculum and internship programs. The school has a capacity of 625 students.

The nine-week work schedule was compressed to five weeks in phases to allow for early occupancy of approximately 8,500 square feet. 

King Chavez Charter was represented by Jon Hamby and Hans Strom, of RED Strategies, a commercial real estate firm exclusively advocating for tenants in San Diego and Southern California. Tim Cowden, of Colliers International represented the landlord.

David Webb, of Jamison Services, acted as construction manager through the construction process, while Francisco Mora, of Jacob Dean Construction was project superintendent. 

David Smith, of Jacob Dean, was project manager while design and permit processing was provided by Becky Playman, of Playman Interiors.


KMA Architecture & Engineering to design facility at Nellis AFB

KMA Architecture & Engineering has been retained by Teehee-Straub JV to design the expansion of the Test Evaluation Squadron Facility at Nellis Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada.

Designs are currently under way and the project is expected to begin construction in spring 2012.

The expansion encompasses a one-story addition to the existing Test Evaluation Squadron Facility, which is located along the flight line at Nellis Air Force Base.

The 16,000-square-foot design includes clerestory windows for daylighting and a shaded outdoor gathering area.

The finished building will provide administrative spaces, as well as classified administrative, secure briefing and video/teleconference auditorium spaces. The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.

“The remodeled building will better accommodate and help streamline administrative divisions,” said Don Blair, president of KMA Architecture & Engineering. “It will also provide additional meeting, teaching and briefing space, which is always in high demand.”

The KMA team consists of Jay Janda and Heather Mertes. Engineering partners include SMR Consulting Group for structural, Engineering Partners for electrical, DSEngineering for mechanical and plumbing, and Construction Testing & Engineering for civil. Young Co. has been retained for interior design and Veltre Engineering as the fire/life safety consultant.
