History Meets 21st Century Information Company

Now spanning three centuries, The Daily Transcript is the only daily business publication edited for Southern California. The paper is a San Diego institution, relied on by generations of business readers.

REPORTING ON THE EVENTS THAT MADE SAN DIEGO
In 1886, the Star of India was a working sailing ship carrying passengers from Great Britain to Australia. The Daily Transcript was already helping San Diego business people make a profit.
In 1915, the Pan Pacific Exposition opened in Balboa Park to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. The Daily Transcript was covering the implications on the local economy.
Starting in 1927 through 1929, The Daily Transcript chronicled Ryan Aircraft’s progress as it built the "Spirit of St. Louis" for its historic solo flight across the Atlantic.
When Salk Institute opened its doors, when UCSD launched and when countless other events took place, The Daily Transcript was there to report and inform the business community.

ROOTS GO DEEP INTO THE REGION

The Daily Transcript is the first newspaper in Southern California to publish on the World Wide Web.
The Daily Transcript traces its roots back to the National City Record, which began publishing September 28, 1882. The name evolved through a succession of owners, becoming the San Diego Daily Transcript in 1886.
In 1909, the Superior Court declared the paper, "A newspaper of general circulation published for the dissemination of local and telegraphic news and intelligence of a general character…," later it became the official newspaper of the City of San Diego.
The 1920s saw the evolution of The Daily Transcript into a true business publication and the masthead boldly proclaimed it "The Business Newspaper of Southwestern California."

REVELLES CONTINUE TRADITION
The Daily Transcript continues to report on San Diego business news and events under its current owners, the Revelle-Scripps family. The family-owned company — CALCOMCO — acquired The Daily Transcript in 1986 from Keith Lister who directed the paper’s development for the previous fourteen years.
Ellen C. Revelle, publisher emerita, is the granddaughter of James E. Scripps, founder of the Detroit News and the grandniece of E.W. Scripps who established the Scripps Howard newspaper chain. Her husband Roger Revelle, a prominent scientist and oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, was instrumental in bringing the University of California to San Diego.
Their son William Revelle serves as chairman of The Daily Transcript and CALCOMCO. The Revelle family has a long history of involvement in San Diego land development, business and philanthropic ventures.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS NEWSPRINT
Under Bill Revelle’s leadership, and today’s publisher Robert L. Loomis’ direction, The Daily Transcript launched the San Diego Source in 1994 - to provide online all it had provided for so many years in print, plus much more uniquely suited to the new technology. The Daily Transcript was the first newspaper in Southern California to publish on the then embryonic World Wide Web. Since then the San Diego Source has developed into one of the Internet’s most successful local sites.

NEW MILLENNIUM DAWNS WITH TRANSCRIPT STRONG
Both in print and electronically, The Daily Transcript and San Diego Source research, report and inform readers and loyal subscribers about San Diego business every working day of the year.
