SD commemorates Pearl Harbor Day

With the 71st anniversary of Pearl Harbor on Friday, many of San Diego’s active and veteran military members and patriotic citizens alike are preparing to commemorate an event that changed the course of world history.

The USS Midway Museum will hold a Pearl Harbor Survivor Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. onboard the ship, with presentations of biodegradable wreaths, the playing of "Taps," prayer, a two-bell ceremony and a gunfire salute by the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s California cutter off Midway’s bow. The Maritime Museum’s pilot boat will also join the ceremony and present biodegradable wreaths in remembrance. Rear Adm. Mac McLaughlin, president and CEO of the USS Midway Museum, will make a keynote speech.

After the ceremony, Rear Adm. Dixon Smith, commander of the Navy’s Southwest Region, will name the command’s top sailor at 10 a.m. Three finalists have been selected in the competition for Sailor of the Year, based on sustained superior performance, contributions to military organizations and local community, proven leadership skills, self-improvement achievements, and military and professional excellence.

This year’s finalists are: Petty Officer 1st Class Lutheran Carter, of Naval Base Coronado; Petty Officer 1st Class Nestor Martinez of Naval Base San Diego; and Petty Officer 1st Class Antonia Diaz of Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.

The Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors group is holding its national convention in San Diego from Tuesday, Dec. 4 through Friday, Dec. 7. The group will be present for the Midway’s memorial ceremony, and will take a tour of the ship afterwards.

The USS Midway Museum’s traditional remembrance is free, and event attendees can peruse the museum at no cost that morning.
