Naval helicopter facility gets a start date

Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) will hold a ground breaking ceremony for its new helicopter maintenance, overhaul and repair facility on Dec. 10.

The ceremony will take place at the corner of Saufley and Utgoff Roads on Naval Air Station North Island.

The new 100,000-square-foot helicopter maintenance facility will cost about $45 million to build.

The facility will replace three existing buildings where Navy and Marine Corps H-60 Seahawk multi-mission and CH-53 Super Stallion transport helicopters are serviced.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest will lead the construction project, which is scheduled to wrap up in June 2014.

FRCSW is the Navy’s premier West Coast aviation maintenance facility, specializing in the overhaul, maintenance, engineering, and logistical support of a wide range of Naval and Marine Corps aircraft.

Last fiscal year, it completed scheduled maintenance and repairs to 44 Seahawk helicopters and 13 Super Stallions.
