Funeral services for retired Rear Adm. Bruce R. Boland, who died of prostate cancer Aug. 19, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. at Mission San Diego de Alcala's St. Francis Chapel (10818 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, 92108).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Veterans Village of San Diego or Armed Services YMCA of San Diego.

Boland, 81, served in the U.S. Navy for 34 years, flew during the Vietnam War, commanded two major Navy ships and was commander of what is now known as Navy Region Southwest.

He later served as president of United Way San Diego and was as a member of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority board.
