ViaSat lands secure-phone contract from Marines

The U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command awarded Carlsbad’s ViaSat Inc. a $1.65 million follow-on contract to engineer an advanced information security system for smartphones.

The development phase of the system is expected to be completed this spring. By summer, the system is slated to be ready for use on any Android device.

The announcement helped turn ViaSat into the top performer on the Standard & Poor’s 500 during the first hour of trading on Wall Street, leading to a 1 percent gain, although that has since been cut in half. That was on top of a huge gain last week, after ViaSat reported record revenues of $286 million during its most recent quarter.
