Valhalla High School student Shea Ricketts has been named the recipient of the 11th Annual AMN/HCC San Diego Scholarship Essay Contest presented by Health Care Communicators (HCC) of San Diego County and AMN Healthcare (NYSE: AHS).
Made possible through a partnership between AMN and HCC, the scholarship has been awarded since 2003 to the high school or college student who best exemplifies excellence in pursuit of a health care career.
Ricketts plans to attend the University of San Diego this fall, majoring in either behavioral neuroscience or biology, and she says she hopes to attend medical school to fulfill her dream of working with and providing health care to people in need.
Born and raised in San Diego, Ricketts, 17, grew up around health care, closely following her father as he made his rounds as a local physician. Even at a young age, she found special joy in connecting with and helping patients.
In 2005, Ricketts' father unexpectedly passed away. It is the memory of her time with her father and his patients that has inspired her to pursue a career in the medical field.
