National City is steeped in history that’s very significant to San Diego County’s early development. When Spanish soldiers and missionaries, led by Father Junipero Serra, occupied land that the Kumeyaay people farmed, they used 26,000 acres in what is now National City as grazing land for their horses and named it El Rancho del Rey, or “Ranch of the King.”
