REIT execs descend on SD for major conference

The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts conference at the Manchester Grand Hyatt next week will cover everything from health care to REITs in the digital age.

Following registration on late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, the NAREIT conference will embark on a discussion of the future of health care REITs. The panelists are slated to be Debra Cafaro, chairman, president and CEO, Ventas Inc. (NYSE: VTR); George Chapman, chairman, president and CEO, Health Care REIT Inc. (Nasdaq: HCN); and James Flaherty, chairman and CEO, HCP Inc. (NYSE: HCP). Ross Nussbaum, UBS (NYSE: UBS) managing director, will moderate the section.

The focus shifts at noon Tuesday with a session on capital markets that is scheduled to be moderated by W. Edward Walter, Host Hotels & Resorts Inc. (NYSE: HST) president and CEO. Host's assets here include the Manchester Grand Hyatt where the conference is being held, the San Diego Marquis & Marina and the Mission Valley Marriott.

The scheduled panelists include Michael Bilerman, a managing director and head of real estate and lodging research for Citi; Michael Graziano, a Goldman Sachs & Co. (NYSE: GS) managing director; and Jeffrey Horowitz, a Bank of America Merrill Lynch global head of real estate who specializes in gaming and lodging properties.

At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch research analysts James Feldman and Jeffrey Spector are scheduled to co-host a panel on business-to-business real estate owners. The scheduled panelists include Michael Foust, CEO of data solutions firm Digital Realty Inc. (NYSE: DLR); Philip Hawkins, president and CEO of Denver-based DCT Industrial Trust Inc. (NYSE: DCT); and Hap Stein, chairman and CEO of Jacksonville-based Regency Centers Corp. (NYSE: REG).

On Wednesday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Andrew McCulloch, Green Street Advisors managing director, will moderate a panel on housing.

The panelists expected to attend the session include William Bayless, American Campus Communities Inc. (NYSE: ACC) president and CEO; Terry Considine, Aimco chairman and CEO; Daniel Fulton, Weyerhaeuser Co. (NYSE: WY) president and CEO; and Timothy Naughton, AvalonBay Communities Inc. (NYSE: AVB) president and board member.

Later Wednesday, the focus shifts to consumer-oriented assets with Steven Sakwa, managing director of financial planning firm ISI Group, moderating that portion of the program.

The panelists include Jon Bortz, Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB) chairman and CEO; Daniel Hurwitz, DDR Corp. (NYSE: DDR) president and CEO; Spencer Kirk, Extra Space Storage Inc. (NYSE: EXR) chairman and CEO; and Robert Taubman, Taubman Centers, Inc. (NYSE: TCO) chairman, president and CEO.

The conference concludes not with a REIT executive but with Mark Shields, a PBS NewsHour political analyst and syndicated columnist at 8 a.m. Thursday. Shields will discuss the impacts of the election.
