Councilman Carl DeMaio has conceded defeat in his bid to become mayor of San Diego after a tight contest against Democratic Rep. Bob Filner. DeMaio acknowledged defeat Wednesday as results showed Filner solidifying his lead of 51 percent to 49 percent.
Filner would become the city's first Democratic mayor in 20 years in a city long led by moderate Republicans.
Mayor Jerry Sanders called Filner San Diego's next mayor and congratulated him on his victory. Sanders is being forced out by term limits.
