Grand jury application deadline extended

The San Diego Superior Court has extended the application deadline for a spot on the 2013-2014 grand jury to Jan. 25.

More than 100 applications have been received by court officials, but they would like to increase the number of applicants by at least 40 more county residents.

Nineteen men and women sit on the San Diego County Grand Jury.

“With the busy holiday season, many people who are interested in participating in this important program lose sight of the deadline and may think they have missed the chance to take part," said Michael Roddy, executive officer of the San Diego Superior Court. "We hope by moving the deadline, we can give these people a chance to put their names into the selection process.”

The grand jury investigates citizen complaints and performs its traditional function as a “watchdog” over government agencies. It does not conduct criminal investigations.

Applications are now available by telephone at 619-450-7272 or in person at the San Diego Superior Court in the jury services office at the Central (downtown) branch, and the jury lounges at the North, South and East branches of the court.

Interested applicants may also download an application from the San Diego Superior Court’s website at www.sdcourts.ca.gov or the grand jury’s website at www.sdcounty.ca.gov/grandjury.

The grand jury works four days a week, approximately six hours a day, from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, at the Hall of Justice located in downtown San Diego. A small stipend per day, plus mileage, and downtown parking are provided.

Qualified candidates will be nominated for a random drawing tentatively scheduled for June 7, 2013. The random drawing gives each supervisorial district equal representation by population.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, have sufficient knowledge of the English language and have lived in the county for one year prior to selection. All candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check. Individuals meeting the above requirements are encouraged to apply.
