Education secretary visits Chula Vista school

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan wrapped up his “Strong Start, Bright Future” back-to-school bus tour on Friday with a visit to Castle Park Middle School in Chula Vista.

Duncan, said the tour, which began on Monday in Santa Fe, N.M., was designed to discuss “how investments in education are critical to our country’s future and how state and local reforms are delivering encouraging results."

Last year, Chula Vista's "Promise Neighborhood," which includes Castle Park and four other schools, received nearly $5 million from the Education Department for the first installment in a five-year grant.

Duncan planned to tour Castle Park with Nadya Dabby, the department’s acting assistant deputy secretary for innovation and improvement, and hold a town hall with local school officials, education stakeholders and community leaders on such topics as early learning, after-school activities, health and wellness services, and crime prevention.
