San Diego mayor-elect shuns party labels

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A moderate Republican city councilman says he scored a decisive win in an election for San Diego mayor because he emphasized that he can work across party lines.

San Diego becomes the nation's largest city with a Republican mayor, and Kevin Faulconer will be the only Republican to lead a major city in California, where Democrats hold all statewide offices.

The 47-year-old former public relations executive says his victory is a mandate to continue voter-approved fiscal measures that he has embraced, such as cutting pensions for city workers and putting more city services up for private bidding.

Faulconer is expected to be sworn in March 3. He replaces Democrat Bob Filner, who resigned amid a torrent of sexual harassment allegations.
