Children's Pool closure vote aims to protect breeding seals

(AP) -- The San Diego City Council has voted to close a beach for five months each year during the harbor seal pupping season.

The ordinance, which passed on a 6-3 vote on Monday, bans public access to Children's Pool in La Jolla between Dec. 15 to May 15 to protect breeding seals and their pups.

Supporters of the closure showed video footage of people harassing the seals.

The measure, which still needs final approval from the state Coastal Commission, is the city's strongest action aimed at protecting the colony of seals on the beach. It is almost certain to add further conflict in a years-long struggle between supporters of the seal colony and those promoting greater beach access to humans.
