Filner appoints deputy chief of staff

San Diego Mayor-elect Bob Filner announced Friday that Allen Jones will be his deputy chief of staff.

Jones will advise and oversee implementation of Filner’s policy and program initiatives.

Since 1993, Jones has been vice president for planning and land development for the H.G. Fenton Co. Before that he was deputy planning director for the city of San Diego and was responsible for the city’s community planning and environmental management programs.

He was also Filner’s chief of staff while the mayor-elect served on the San Diego City Council.

“It is very important that a person with Allen Jones’ understanding of land use, community planning and real estate development assist me in implementing my objective to put neighborhoods first,” Filner said, in a statement. “I have asked Mr. Jones to focus particular effort on accelerating the update of our community plans, facilitating job creation by streamlining the city’s regulatory and permitting processes and making environmental sustainability the foundation of our planning programs.”

Jones currently chairs the Navajo Community Planners.
