Hering named new executive director at CCSE

A prominent face both in San Diego military and sustainability circles, retired Rear Adm. Len Hering Sr. has been named the new executive director of the California Center for Sustainable Energy, CCSE announced Thursday.

Most recently an adviser to a number of boards and companies on matters of sustainability, energy use and water conservation, Hering spent 32 years in the Navy before retiring in 2009. While in the Navy, he built a team recognized throughout the military as superior in environmental protection and sustainable innovation, and President George W. Bush awarded him a 2005 Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management, for recognition of efforts to reduce oil spills and improve recycling.

CCSE had been without a permanent executive director since Irene Stillings left the post in March after 10 years in the role. Andrew McAllister, former CCSE director of policy and strategy, was appointed to serve on an interim basis following Stillings’ departure, but within weeks of the interim appointment accepted an appointment from Gov. Jerry Brown to the California Energy Commission. Since then, CCSE board member Robert Wilder has filled the position on an interim basis.

Hering was selected after a nationwide search for a successor, CCSE said in a release.

"CCSE’s entire board of directors is very excited to have an individual with Admiral Hering's sustainability credentials take over leadership of our organization,” said Alan Ball, an energy consultant and chair of CCSE’s board of directors, in the release. “We are confident that Hering, working with CCSE’s talented staff, can provide the knowledge, skills and direction to take the organization to higher levels, offering its energy services statewide and beyond."

A resident of Chula Vista, Hering has received several state, local and federal awards for efforts ensuring the Navy’s environmental responsibilities with fiscally sound practices, including the creation of the Federal Sustainability Network in the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, CCSE said.
