Local solar initiative rebates to run dry Dec. 31

A solar energy incentive program administered locally that provides incentives that are about twice as generous as the California Solar Initiative is scheduled to close by year’s end.

With just four days left, the San Diego Solar Program’s administrator, Sullivan Solar Power, is pushing to get consumers in on the action before time runs out.

Sullivan launched the San Diego Solar Program in April under a structure similar to the CSI, with capacity milestones being followed by reduced incentive rates. In its closing days, customers in the program are still eligible to receive a 20-cent-per-watt incentive. The average homeowner will receive $1,000 cash back, Sullivan Solar said Thursday in a news release.

“The San Diego Solar Program is a game changer for those residents who have wanted to go solar but thought it was too expensive,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power.

The program, he added, was designed to allow homeowners to go solar without the need for home equity or spending upfront money out of pocket.

The initiative was limited to 500 San Diego County residents. Sullivan estimates cash-back incentive payments to its customers under the program to approach $800,000 collectively if fully subscribed.

As of Thursday afternoon, just more than 200 spots remained, according to Erica Johnson, Sullivan’s director of community relations and development.

She added that past experience with smaller, community-based programs — Sullivan has initiated about 15 such initiatives in various communities around the county through the last three years — has shown a substantial percentage of sign-ups come in a program’s closing day or two.
