Qualcomm, Scripps Health make Fortune list

Qualcomm Inc., which held the spotlight during last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, continues to garner attention.

The San Diego-based chipmaker took the No. 11 spot on Fortune magazine’s "100 Best Companies to Work For" in America list, jumping from No. 23 last year.

The 2013 list includes 2011 revenue, which was $14.96 billion, and employee count, which grew 17.5 percent over the year to 15,693 people.

More people will soon get to know what it's like to work there.

Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) currently has 1,000 open positions, 400 of which are in software engineering, the company revealed to Fortune. Others are in engineering and business disciplines.

Impress Qualcomm recruiters by being authentic and relaxed, a digital hardware lead staffing specialist told Fortune. Another interviewing tip? Candidates should respond to specific questions -- not give canned answers.

“Employees at the wireless-technology company are encouraged to share ideas at an annual in-house tech conference,” wrote Fortune, describing what makes the company shine.

Last year engineers submitted nearly 200 papers, and winners presented at the forum and participated in speaking events, Fortune added.

Qualcomm has now appeared on the 16th annual list 15 years in a row.

Qualcomm’s Dan Sullivan, executive vice president of human resources, reacted to the news.

“We’ve created a culture that fosters teamwork and innovation, demonstrates a genuine commitment to our talented and dedicated employees – and truly sets us apart,” he said.

It was one of two local companies that made the list.

The other is Scripps Health, which rose from No. 56 to No. 43 this year. The company has appeared on the list six times.

Its 2011 revenue totaled $2.6 billion, and its work force grew by 2.3 percent to 12,311 employees.

The health care system has been transformed under CEO Chris Van Gorder, noted Fortune, with 19 percent of workers making more than $90,000.

“Scripps has worked tirelessly to create an environment in which our employees feel secure, appreciated and empowered, which in turn results in excellent care and improved outcomes for our patients,” said Van Gorder.

The Fortune list included 16 California-based companies.

Mountain View-based Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) took the top spot for the fourth year in a row, with comfortable perks like 100,000 hours of free massages in 2012, noted Fortune.

New to the coveted campus are wellness centers and a sports complex that includes a roller hockey rink and areas for basketball, bocce and shuffle ball.

Other companies on the list that have a local work force include Redwood City-based DPR Construction (No. 15); Santa Clara-based Hitachi Data Systems (No. 63); Mountain View-based Intuit (No. 22); and Seattle-based law firm Perkins Coie (No. 33); and more (full list here).

The 10 top-paying companies on the list include a mix of energy and technology companies and law firms. Associates at Boston-based Bingham McCutchen LLP, for example, rake in $216,000 in average annual pay.
