San Diego tops beer list

San Diego County is the nation's best place for locally brewed beer, with "more brilliance per square mile than any other American city," according to a top 10 list Tuesday in SeattlePI, the online successor to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The column -- written by beer reviewer Steve Body, cited the presence of "superstars" like Karl Strauss, AleSmith, Green Flash, Coronado Brewing, Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, Alpine Beer Co., Stone Brewing Co., Societe Brewing Co., Ballast Point, Iron Fist, Mike Hess, AutomaticBrewingCo. and Rip Current, with 39 pending brewery licenses.

The other regions on the top 10 list included the metro areas of Portland; Seattle; Denver-Boulder, Colo.; Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo, Mich.; San Francisco; Fort Collins-Longmont-Loveland, Colo.; Bend, Ore.; and Chicago, with honorable mentions going to Asheville, N.C. and the state of Vermont.
