Italian café opens first U.S. location in Hillcrest

Bringing the brand and concept over from Italy, Caffe Vergnano 1882 is opening its first U.S. location in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood in mid-April.

The coffeehouse/café is modeled after more than 50 units now operating in 13 different countries, including Italy, Germany and England.

Hector Rabellino is moving from Italy to San Diego to lead a planned expansion of Caffe Vergnano 1882 throughout California. The plan is to open six stores over the next five years.

"I am here to manage, train and supervise the entire operation in order to guarantee an authentic replication of our Italian concept," said Rabellino. "To uphold the integrity of our reputable Italian product, service and recipes, experienced trainers from Italy have come to California to work with our baristas, chef and floor staff, to ensure the operations are run parallel to those we implemented in Italy and other locations."
