'From Terra's Table' garners best cookbook award

Terra American Bistro's Executive Chef Jeff Rossman's farm-to-table cookbook, "From Terra's Table: New American Food From Southern California Organic Farms," recently added a new honor to its list of accolades. The San Diego Book Awards Association recently named it the Best Cookbook 2011 in the 17th annual San Diego Book & Writing Awards.

The cookbook contains just over 200 pages of wine- and beer-paired recipes from Rossman's 14 years of professional cooking, first for Terra Restaurant in uptown San Diego's Hillcrest and now, Terra American Bistro in San Diego's East College Area. Rossman also highlights the stories of the local growers and artisans from which he sources and outlines resources for food activism and advocacy.


Karl Strauss Brewing Co. was recently voted "Best Brewery" by the San Diego Chapter of the California Restaurant Association, in addition to taking home five medals and an honorable mention from the Los Angeles Commercial Beer Competition.


Accommodating a growing interest in golf instruction for women at The Grand Golf Club, The Grand Del Mar has named Kristen Muranyi as its new assistant golf professional.

Muranyi was hired specifically to concentrate on expanding and developing the club's growing spate of classes and programs for female golfers.

"As the number of female golfers continue to grow," said Shawn Cox, director of golf, "we plan to place a bigger emphasis on golf programs and instruction for women.


Sip your way around the world with this summer's tastings of international wines at the Hilton Garden Inn in Del Mar.

On select Saturdays, sommelier Kevin Frantze and emcee Bob Rauch will lead you through five distinct wines from around the globe. Each tasting will showcase the best of the region's winemaking abilities and diversity. The tastings will hit a sweet note on Aug. 13, when they'll pair wine with a chocolate tasting.

The down-to-earth and casual format is designed to educate and build the confidence of wine lovers -- from beginner to intermediate.

Each attendee will receive a complimentary bottle of wine. Tasting dates include July 2, 16, 30 and Aug. 13, 27.

Each tasting costs $29 and includes pourings of six wines, a variety of specialty cheeses, fruits and nuts, and a bottle of wine.
