Coronado base honored for food service program

The Naval Base in Coronado was recently announced as the 2012 winner of the Navy Captain F. Ney Memorial Awards for outstanding food service, in the ashore category.

The awards encourage excellence in Navy Food Service programs with the objective of improving the quality of life for Navy personnel.


Mama's Kitchen's second annual Man Diego Fundraising event is scheduled to be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, March 27, at True North Tavern in North Park.

The event is a friendly competition for men and women where teams move through four rounds of short quick bar games (sans alcohol), advance to head-to-head rounds, then compete in a taco speed-eating contest to decide the winner.

Set to open in Hillcrest later this month, Taco Banh is an "upscale taqueria with an Asian twist" that will specialize in organic ingredients and natural, hormone free meats.

Owner and Executive Chef Chris Sayre most recently worked as executive chef for Paradise Grille in North County.

The Boulevard Cooking Class series, organized by the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association is set to begin with the first class on Monday, Feb 27, at Flavor of East Africa. Part of a six-class series, the classes run from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Other dates include March 5 at Tiger Tiger; March 12 at Mama's Bakery; March 19 at Eclipse Chocolate; March 26 at El Borrego and April 2 at Apertivo.


Downtown La Jolla is now home to Puesto Mexican Street Food, which opened up last week. The new eatery is a fast-casual environment where meals are made to order at a walk-up plancha or griddle and diners can make a series of choices to customize tacos and rice bowls.

The venue is owned and operated by two brothers, Eric and Alan Adler.
