During the month of April, Terra American Bistro launched Terra Tens to raise money for two of San Diego nonprofit Jewish Family Service's programs: the Hand Up Youth Pantry and Project SARAH. Chef Jeff Rossman and his family did this in association with the first anniversary of Terra's new location to celebrate their success.

Guests who brought in a non-perishable food item for during that time, received 10 percent off their bill – in turn, Terra donated an additional 10 percent to JFS's Project Sarah, providing emergency assistance, therapy and other support for adults and teens experiencing abuse and for children in abusive homes.

Through Terra, the community donated 127 pounds of food, according to JFS, enabling the organization to provide meals for 99 individuals. Moneys raised through the other component of the fundraiser went directly to Project SARAH and were used to support families left with extra rent after the departure of an abuser.

San Diego native, Ben Lieberman has been named executive chef at Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island.

Picked to lead the 30-member culinary team, overseeing all food operations, including catering and banquets, Lieberman was most recently the chef de cuisine at Searsucker, and also oversaw the menu design for Burlap – San Diego chef Brian Malarkey's Del Mar venture. In fact, Lieberman was an early protégé of Malarkey's, working with him in 2005 at Oceanaire in Indianapolis.

Sailors from all over Southern California will have the chance to combine their favorite pastime on June 9 while raising funds for life-saving research and programs when the first Leukemia Cup Regatta hosted by the Cortez Racing Association takes to San Diego Bay

The event is open to all participants, including sailboat enthusiasts – skippers and sailors – and spectators who like to watch from the shore and cheer on the boats. Volunteers can also help with planning or on event day, or donate to a participant's fundraising.

This year, those who raise more than $8,500 in their Leukemia Cup Regatta will win a weekend of sailing with Gary Jobson in New Orleans. Jobson, the national chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta, in 2003, after years of service on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, was diagnosed with lymphoma and, in his words, "became a beneficiary of the research advances I had helped support," - is now cancer free.

The lease is signed and planning is under way for a new Mexican restaurant from Diane Powers' Bazaar Del Mundo Restaurant Group, expected to open next spring.

The restaurant will take the former Red Robin space in Del Mar Highlands Town Center and will undergo a complete renovation and expansion to reflect Powers' sense of design.

"We work hard to cultivate tenants who have San Diego origins," said Elizabeth Schreiber, vice president and general manager for Donahue Schriber, owner and operator of Del Mar Highlands Town Center. "We're thrilled to welcome Diane's latest venture to our line-up of top restaurants, as she continues her history of creating beautiful restaurants and delicious Mexican cuisine for families all over San Diego County." Stay tuned!
