Heart of San Diego Gala to support UCSD cardiovascular center

The 2012 Heart of San Diego Gala benefitting University of California, San Diego's Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center will be held Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad.

The event will honor Wendy Walker, Emmy-winning producer of "Larry King Live," and Randall Woods, founder and managing director of Eden Woods Investments, both of whom have supported the cardiovascular center.

All funds from the event will go toward the purchase of a new da Vinci Surgical System for the performance of robotic, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures.

Since 1997, the annual Heart of San Diego Gala has raised more than $7 million to enhance cardiovascular clinical care, research, education and outreach at the University of California, San Diego. For more information, go to

'Coupon Wars' contest to help stock shelves at Mama's Pantry

Mama's Kitchen is holding a "Coupon Wars" contest to help fill the shelves of Mama's Pantry with non-perishable food items, according to a release.

In "Coupon Wars," which runs until April 3, participants will purchase any foods listed on Mama's Pantry's wish list, while competing to save the most amount of money using coupons. Some encouraged items include canned tuna or salmon, boxes of cereal, bags of rice, packages of dried beans and canned goods. The person who saves the most money using coupons will receive two tickets to Mama's Day, a restaurant tasting fundraiser on May 11.

Mama's Pantry is a service of Mama's Kitchen that allows men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS to collect non-perishable food items free of charge. For more information about the contest, go to

Super Dentists donates TVs to San Ysidro Health Center

The dental group The Super Dentists has donated six flat-screen TVs to the dental facility at San Ysidro Health Center to ease some of the fears and stress that children have when they visit the dentist.

"At The Super Dentists, we see how much more of a positive experience it can be for children to watch TV during treatment," Dr. Nazli Keri said, according to a release. "The TVs that we donated will help alleviate some of the fear some children may have and instead increase dental health awareness as they develop into adolescence.”

The San Ysidro Health Center's mission is to provide low-cost, high-quality, comprehensive primary care services to low-income families.

USD gives Kaleidoscope Award to Girl Scouts San Diego

Girl Scouts San Diego was recently presented the University of San Diego's Institute for Nonprofit Governance Kaleidoscope Award, according to a release.

Since 2007, USD has been giving the award to recognize and inspire excellence in nonprofit governance. Awardees are charged with proving that they are able to safeguard their organizationsí missions, oversee operations, ensure accountability, move their organizations wisely into a preferred future and offer technical assistance.

Girl Scouts San Diego received an honorarium of $500 and a plaque of recognition during USD's eighth annual Nonprofit Governance Symposium.
