Foodies, rejoice: Women's Museum fundraiser features wine, cheese, chocolate

The Womenís Museum of California will bring about 600 people together in Balboa Park to sample some of the best wines, cheese and chocolate that California has to offer at the fifth annual Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Festival on June 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The festival is part of the museum's community outreach and fundraising efforts, according to a release, and will promote and support the ongoing activities at the Womenís Museum of California, including cultural and educational exhibits, lectures, vintage clothing presentations, school tours, and a high school and college student intern program.

In addition to dozens of well-known chocolate, wine and cheese vendors, the festival will feature live music from the Sue Palmer Band performing a combination of swing and jazz.

Prices are $40 for single tickets and $30 per person for groups of 10 or more. Each ticket includes tastings of six wines and six foods.


Oyster Fest to benefit Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Veterans Research Corp.

On June 16, San Diego will host its third annual Oyster Fest, a music, oyster and beer festival.

Beginning at noon at the Embarcadero Marina Park North, attendees can enjoy oyster cooking demonstrations from San Diego celebrity chefs, the Shuck 'n Suck oyster eating competition and the Miss Oyster Fest pageant while watching live performances from Iration, Vokab Kompany, The Silent Comedy, Little Hurricane and Splitfinger.

Proceeds will benefit Team in Training: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as well as Veterans Research Corp., a San Diego-based organization that supports local medical research addressing the health concerns of veterans.


Celgene Corp. raises $12,000 for Susan G. Komen, Light the Night Walk

Celgene Corp. (Nasdaq: CELG) announced it raised $12,000 at its “Baskets and Beverages Benefit” last week, with proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Societyís Light The Night Walk.

The global biopharmaceutical company is engaged primarily in the discovery, development and commercialization of novel therapies for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases. Funds collected from the organization's annual event will go toward cancer patients and survivors.

“Last yearís event resulted in $8,000 in donations," said Patty Waymire, executive assistant at Celgene Corp. in San Diego, according to a release. "The fact that we surpassed that number is pretty remarkable. We’re grateful to all the companies that donated items, employees that created baskets, and appreciate all our supporters that helped us collect thousands of dollars for two amazing causes.”


Women's Foundation names new board president

The San Diego Womenís Foundation has announced that Rita Solberg, longtime Point Loma resident, will take on the role of president of its board of directors for the upcoming year. The foundation also named Jacqueline Bell, Linda Hensel and Sara Bennett as its three new board members.

A volunteer in San Diego for more than 25 years, Solberg joined the foundation in 2004 and has been an active member ever since, according to a release. Solberg's other community roles have included president of the Junior League of San Diego as well as the Francis Parker School Parentsí Association, president of Mothers and Daughters Charity Assisting Philanthropies, and board member of Voices for Children and Lutheran Social Services of Southern California.
