Girl Scouts annual fundraiser to celebrate 100th anniversary

On Sept. 14, Girl Scouts San Diego will host its 15th annual fundraiser to keep Girl Scouting available and affordable for 30,000 local girls, including those in shelters, detention centers and low-income areas. Urban Campout 2012: A Space Odyssey begins at 6 p.m. at San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Attendees will also celebrate Girl Scoutingís 100th anniversary with dinner, dancing to live music, a performance by the Girl Scout Chorus and flight simulator games, according to a release.

Auction items include a Holland America Line cruise; VIP tours of the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Washington, D.C./Annapolis, and a CSI lab; and excursions to the 2013 Kentucky Derby, Phoenix Open and other national events.

UC San Diego receives $4 million fund to support graduate students

The University of California, San Diego has announced that Jerome and Miriam Katzin have endowed a $4 million fellowship fund to support the school's graduate students. The endowed gift will establish The Katzin Prize Endowment Fund to support UC San Diego graduate students studying for a doctoral degree in any discipline who demonstrate outstanding talent and promise, according to a release.

“We know that in order to stay competitive, the campus must increase its endowment, notably in areas that will attract excellent faculty and students,” said Jerome Katzin, retired investment banker and chair emeritus of the UC San Diego Foundation.

The Katzins have supported UCSD in the past with such gifts as the Katzin Research Laboratories at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, the Katzin Chair in Jewish Civilization, the Courtyard at Muir College, the Chair in Corporate Governance at the Rady School of Management, and other faculty chairs and funds. 


Neighborhood Healthcare to host free dental clinic in Escondido

Neighborhood Healthcare, a nonprofit community health center, will host a free dental sealant, screening and varnish clinic on Saturday for infants, children and teenagers, according to a release. 

The event will provide each child with a free dental assessment and a fluoride varnish, a coating painted onto their teeth to prevent new cavities and to help stop cavities that have already started.

Prizes, games, scavenger hunts and community resource information will entertain and inform families while they wait their turn to see a dentist.

The dental clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Neighborhood Healthcareís Ray M. Dickinson Wellness Center located at 425 N. Date St. in Escondido. Walk-ins are accepted, but the clinic will give priority to those with appointments. For an appointment, call 619-692-8858 by Friday.


6 Degrees donates $22,000 to Make-A-Wish San Diego

6 Degrees, an organization dedicated to helping San Diego professionals grow their business, raised $22,000 at its five-year anniversary gala to help grant several wishes for Make-A-Wish San Diego, according to a release. 

The first wish to be granted is for 8-year-old La Mesa resident Jacob, who has battled leukemia throughout his life. This month he will receive his wish of going on a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas.

6 Degrees will continue to support partner charities throughout the year. On Oct. 27, the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center will host the second annual Charity Texas Holdíem Poker Tournament to raise funds for Rady Children’s Hospital. Anyone is welcome to attend and can register at sd6degrees.com. 


Oceanside Charitable Foundation names new board chair, board members

The Oceanside Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, has named Beverly Holtz as the new incoming board chair and Robert Gleisberg and Suzy Martinek as new board members.

Holtz, a resident of Oceanside for more than 30 years, is a Realtor with Prudential California Realty and, with her husband, Louis, is a founding member of The Oceanside Charitable Foundation.
