On The Agenda: Local calendar heavy with events after MLK Jr. Day

Many businesses will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. And if your calendar is looking a little empty toward the end of the week, the local business community has stepped in to fill it up. All hours of the day are covered, from morning breakfasts on growing a business and an economic outlook, to a lunch on how personal beliefs affect organizations, to nighttime receptions and installations of officers.

CommNexus Military SIG presents its "Iraq & Afghanistan Wars: The Strategic Shift Back to the Pacific Theater" on Wednesday with keynote speaker Maj. Gen. Melvin Spiese, the deputy commanding general of the First Marine Expeditionary Force. He will discuss the Marine Corps’ air-ground task force concept and how it’s employed by the service's largest expeditionary headquarters to meet global force demand. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mintz Levin on 3580 Carmel Mountain Road, Suite 300.

The Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego and the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego host their 35th annual Dinner and Installation of Officers on Thursday. The event, “Driven,” will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Hazard Center on 7450 Hazard Center Drive.

The San Diego Venture Group presents it Venture Outlook 2013 on Thursday. Learn what’s in store for the venture world in 2013 with speakers Jason Mendelson, managing director of the Foundry Group; Josh Green, general partner of Mohr Davidow Ventures; and David Kabakoff, Ph.D., of Sofinnova Ventures. The outlook starts at 7 a.m. at the Marriott Del Mar on 11966 El Camino Real.

The Entrepreneurs’ Organization Lunch & Learn will feature Michelle Saul on Thursday. Saul will help enable members to gain new perspective and appreciation of how their personal beliefs affect their response to change, and how that reflects to the bottom line in their organizations. The South County Economic Development Council hosts a Chancellor Reception to welcome UC San Diego Chancellor Dr. Pradeep Khosla to the South Bay. Khosla will meet with South Bay business leaders and officials to learn about opportunities and developments in the area. The event runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Southwestern College on 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista.

Come see the Lawyers Club of San Diego's "Then & Now: Reproductive Choice" on Thursday to honor the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This celebration will take a look back on the impact of Roe v. Wade, the milestones achieved and local champions of the reproductive justice movement. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jacobs Center on 404 Euclid Ave.

Learn about growing a business based on internal cash flow at the Bootstrappers Breakfast. This event is for founders who are actively bootstrapping a startup and other attendees in early stage high-tech startups. The breakfast runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Coco’s Restaurant & Bakery on 4280 Nobel Drive.

Executive coach and professor Jeffrey Klubeck will provide a “crash course” on S.M.A.A.R.T. goal setting at the Poway Chamber of Commerce’s Business over Breakfast on Friday. S.M.A.A.R.T. goals can help produce greater results in a business in 2013 and participants will learn how to set realistic goals, giving them a competitive edge to pursue the business they want. The San Diego Workforce Partnership hosts its 29th annual Economic Roundtable on Friday. This roundtable is the region’s longest running free economic forecasting event, which provides insight into changing market conditions and new economic realities. The discussion will feature a panel of experts covering the future of the economy including global markets, employment outlook and real estate. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at USD's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on 5998 Alcala Park.

The San Diego Convention Center hosts CSM 2013 from Jan. 21 through Jan. 24. More than 9,000 physical therapy professions are expected to attend the combined sections meeting (CSM) of the American Physical Therapy Association. There will be an exhibit hall with products and services, and programming sessions covering aquatic physical therapy, geriatrics, hand rehabilitation, oncology, neurology, orthopedics and more. The Convention Center is located on 111 W. Harbor Drive.
