Jury issues new indictment in political funds case

Officials say a federal grand jury has issued a new indictment against a luxury car dealer, a Mexican businessman and a San Diego lobbyist that brings the defendants into a single case charging them with illegally funneling money to politicians.

The U.S. Attorney in Southern California says the indictment was filed Tuesday against Jose Susumo Azano, Marco Polo Cortes and Ravneet Singh, as well as Singh's campaign-service company, ElectionMall Inc.

The U.S. Attorney's office says Azano illegally funneled more than $500,000 to support San Diego politicians, including $120,000 to back former Mayor Bob Filner.

The indictment also says the defendants were part of a larger conspiracy to funnel Azano's money into political campaigns.

Federal law prohibits foreign nationals from donating to domestic political campaigns.
