Michelle Dicks first began working with OwnerGUARD Corporation in 2003, as outside counsel. She joined the company as insurance and legal counsel in 2006, and was appointed general counsel in 2009. Dicks is responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s legal activities.
OwnerGUARD is a full-service insurance agency that offers finance and insurance products. The company develops debt cancellation contracts, vehicle service contracts, vehicle protection products and guaranteed asset protection (GAP products). OwnerGUARD also writes insurance policies and seeks approval for such policies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The corporation has an underwriting department, a claims department, and a marketing department with nationwide reach.
Dicks supports all departments within the company. She is responsible for ensuring that all of OwnerGUARD’s products meet state and federal requirements. Dicks also monitors the regulatory and legal environments related to OwnerGUARD’s products. To that end, in 2011, she spearheaded an effort to change the law in California related to the sale of GAP products, resulting the passage of AB 125. Dicks is also responsible for the company’s contracts, as well as providing advice on coverage issues, advertising and human resources.
Dicks is actively involved in industry associations. She is on the board of directors for the Consumer Credit Industry Association, and former chair of the law committee. Dicks is an appointee to the California State Bar Business Law Section, Insurance Law Committee, and incoming vice-chair of programs/education. She was selected as a member of the 2012-2013 Leadership Academy of the ABA’s Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section. She is a member of the American Financial Services Association Vehicle Finance Division and State Government Affairs Committee. Locally, she is on the board of directors for the San Diego chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel and serves as the vice president of membership; she is the former chair of the pro bono committee.
Dicks received a B.A. in political science from Stanford University, where she was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Stanford Associates, and was Most Valuable Player of the water polo team. She received her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, where she received an Achievement Award from the Hastings 1066 Foundation and was the executive managing editor of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly.
