Major Cases

As a deputy district attorney, Ialeggio is in court every day. She is assigned to the Family Protection unit, where she specializes in cases involving children and victims of domestic violence.

The following cases are the most memorable: People v. Darius Butler, ADB231, attempted murder, kidnapping for a sex crime, sodomy and forced oral copulation. Convicted Nov. 2, 2012, Judge Charles Gill. The defendant and victim had a prior romantic relationship with a valid restraining order in place. Despite this order, Butler contacted the victim and she willfully went to his home. He then refused to let her go home and committed a variety of egregious sex crimes and then tried to stab her to death. The victim was saved by a good Samaritan who let her into his home as she ran to save her life. Butler was sentenced to life in prison on May 2, 2013.

People v. Aaron Taylor, ACE447, torture and mayhem, convicted Sept. 22, 2008, Judge Jeffrey Fraser. The victim was a 24-year-old developmentally disabled man who had the mental capabilities of a 7-year-old. He was brutally tortured by being tied up and burned with a hot knife, and then carved with the knife in his chest. The victim was awarded the Citizen of Courage award in 2010 in San Diego County, and the defendant was convicted of torture and sent to prison.

People v. Elizabeth Sanders ACS159 felony child abuse-abusive head trauma-convicted Aug. 9, 2011, Honorable Joan Weber, media case. Foster mother abused a 3-month-old baby by breaking seven bones in the baby’s body. Defense argued the baby had an underlying medical condition, but the jury convicted Sanders of all counts and allegations of felony child abuse. She was convicted of three strikes. Ialeggio received an award at the Angeles Foster Family Luncheon in October 2011 for her efforts in this case.

People v. Michael Gonzales, murder/not guilty by reason of insanity plea-convicted of first degree murder and found sane, sentenced to life in prison. March 5, 2009, Honorable Melinda Lasater, media case.

Professional Background

Ialeggio has been been a deputy district attorney for nine years. She has prosecuted more than 75 cases to jury trial. She is most proud that she prosecuted and convicted a first-degree murder case after only four years of being an attorney. Additionally, this past year, she had a career highlight when her father flew in from Northern California to watch her opening and closing statements in a prominent jury trial.

She has prosecuted more than 100 murder, manslaughter, abusive head trauma (shaken baby), child molest, robbery, stabbing, torture, attempted murder and rape cases. These are some of the toughest and most serious cases the district attorney’s office handles. She specializes in crimes against children and has become an expert in the area of shaken-baby cases. She also prosecutes a large number of molestation cases.

When Ialeggio entered law school, she had no idea what type of lawyer she wanted to be and she was afraid of the courtroom. During her second year summer, she clerked for the Hon. Luis Vargas. Judge Vargas suggested she look into the district attorney’s office. The San Diego District Attorney’s Office turned out to be her dream career, and helping victims also helped dissolve some of that courtroom fear.

Professional Affiliations

Ialeggio serves on the board of directors for the Lawyers Club of San Diego and is the incoming vice president of public relations. She is also editor of Lawyers Club News, and a committee member of Fund for Justice, a charitable arm dedicated to fundraising for at-risk women and children.

Ialeggio currently teaches and trains local law enforcement, district attorneys statewide and students at the University of San Diego. This year she served as faculty for USD’s first post-graduation training program for alumni focusing on trial skills. She also serves on the San Diego County District Attorney Legal Training and Advisory Committee.

Personal Affiliations

Ialeggio was founding member of the University of Southern California Women’s Club of San Diego back in 2003 and served on the board of directors. Currently, her nonlaw related activities center around running and triathlons. She has completed several local and national marathons.

Personal Background

Ialeggio is originally from Northern California but relocated to Southern California for college and law school. She is a proud aunt to three nieces and a nephew, and has a 1-year-old golden retriever.
