Kevan P. McLaughlin is the founder of McLaughlin Legal, a boutique tax law firm established in 2009. His practice focuses on all aspects of federal and California tax law, with a special emphasis on representing taxpayers in civil and criminal tax litigation and controversy cases. McLaughlin has represented taxpayers before the U.S. Tax Court, IRS, Department of Justice, IRS Office of Professional Responsibility, Employment Development Department, California Board of Equalization, Franchise Tax Board, and the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.
Originally from Colorado, McLaughlin attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. There he double majored in political science and economics with a special international emphasis. McLaughlin received his law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law, where he earned a Specialization Certificate in Tax Law with distinction and served as the executive articles editor of the Golden Gate University Law Review. McLaughlin received his Master of Laws (LL.M) in taxation from the University of San Diego School of Law.
McLaughlin is invited to speak frequently on various tax topics, and has been published in the Journal of Accountancy, Tax Notes Today, and the Golden Gate University Law Review. San Diego Metro Magazine also recognized McLaughlin as one of San Diego’s top tax attorneys in 2011 and 2012.
McLaughlin is active in San Diego and California’s tax law communities. He has previously led the San Diego County Bar Association’s Taxation Section and the local chapter of the California State Bar Taxation Section Young Tax Lawyers. McLaughlin has also volunteered and worked with the California State Board of Equalization Taxpayer Appeals Assistance Program, the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, and the San Diego County Bar Association’s U.S. Tax Court Pro Bono Program.
In his free time, McLaughlin enjoys spending time with his wife Kelly and son Cael in San Diego’s North County. He is honored for this opportunity and thankful for the guidance and support from his family, friends, mentors and colleagues.
