J. Patrick Hicks is an associate with Marks, Finch, Thornton & Baird LLP, practicing in the areas of trusts and estates, and business and commercial transactions. His practice includes estate and tax planning, trust administration, probate, business formations, and commercial transactions.
Hicks works closely with clients, as well as their families and professional advisers, to determine their estate and business planning objectives, identify related tax and non-tax issues, and implement planning strategies to achieve the clients’ needs and objectives. He counsels clients on the formation and operation of businesses and coordinates business succession strategies with estate planning objectives. He has also worked with clients in the development of comprehensive estate plans for holding commercial real estate and business interests.
Hicks advises clients on the tax consequences and other issues related to the ownership and transfer of high-value luxury assets, including airplanes, helicopters, and yachts. Hicks also advises clients on multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax issues and the U.S. estate, gift, and income tax consequences of estate planning for foreign real estate holdings.
Hicks completed his undergraduate work at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., graduating in 2005 with a B.A. in economics while serving as a firefighter for the town of Davidson. Hicks received his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in 2008, where he chaired the Moot Court Board and served on the Public Service Advisory Board. Hicks then obtained his LL.M. in Taxation from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2010. Hicks is admitted to practice in California and North Carolina and is a member of the Taxation Law and Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law sections of the San Diego County Bar Association.
When not at work, Hicks enjoys travelling, spending time with family, camping and whitewater rafting.
