Sigurd Lars Carlson is a senior counsel at Sempra Energy. His primary practice focuses on the development, regulation and financing of energy projects and capital intensive infrastructure projects. He is involved in the development of Sempra Energy’s Cameron LNG natural gas liquefaction project, a major natural gas infrastructure project in Louisiana involving international equity investors and lenders. Carlson also practices in general corporate transactional matters.
Prior to joining Sempra Energy in early 2013, Carlson practiced at Latham & Watkins’ San Diego and Los Angeles offices, representing major project lenders and developers in connection with many different types of energy projects, including geothermal, wind, solar, and natural gas fired peaking and combined cycle projects.
Carlson’s experience at Latham & Watkins includes representation of a major developer client in connection with a first-of-its-kind transaction resulting in the shuttering of five carbon-intensive petroleum coke-burning power plants in exchange for the extension by a major investor owned utility of power purchase agreements for two efficient natural-gas-fired peaker plants in California’s Central Valley, which resulted in the elimination of upward of 5 percent of the investor-owned utility’s greenhouse gas footprint virtually overnight. Carlson has also represented lenders and borrowers in major solar project financings in California, Nevada and Arizona. Carlson’s experience also includes general corporate transactional matters.
Carlson holds a B.S. in foreign service from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. He received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. Prior to practicing law, Carlson worked as a performing artist and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild. Carlson is fluent in French, Spanish and Swedish.
