Donated fruit orchard to help feed families in need

The Dreyerís Fruit Bars “Communities Take Root” program, a nationwide initiative in collaboration with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, on Monday is giving a fruit orchard to San Diego-based Bridge of Hope, one of 20 organizations nationwide that will receive an orchard this year. Dreyer’s hope is that the fruit orchards will not only beautify the community, but also help to strengthen the neighborhood and encourage healthy eating, according to a release.

The Bridge of Hope is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping distressed families in transition, such as leaving homeless and domestic violence shelters, or struggling with poverty, single parenthood or being a refugee in San Diego. The Bridge of Hope works to provide furniture, clothing and food to families throughout San Diego, serving food to about 1,300 families per month. The fruit orchard donation will assist Bridge of Hope in serving those in need with fresh, locally grown fruit.
